How to get rid of moles in your yard

February 20, 2017, 12:00 am

Having moles in your yard can be disasturous to a healthy lawn. Their tunnels will cause grass to brown and die.

Moles are in your lawn because there is food there. The primary food they seek are grubworms. There are different insecticides that are focused on killing grubworrms, which will cause the moles to move elsewhere to find food.

Depending on your location, this method works well. The insecticide can be found at Meijer or Home Depot but can also be expensive. If you have a large area that is infested, this may not be the best, or if you live in a Downtown area, you may not want to send moles to feed on your neighbors lawn either.

Other methods to remove the mole iteself are:

1. Traps - There are many kids of traps found at your local hardware.
2. Gas - if you successfully gas a major nest you should see positive results.
3. Get rid of the moles with poisonous bait.
4. Call a professional pest control service.

Other methods we've heard which may or may not work:

1. Juicy fruit gum
2. Putting dry ice in their tunnels
3. Certain plants such as daffodils, marigolds, alliums, and fritillarias are said to be natual deterants.

Moles may feed on your lawn from late Spring to late Fall so finding a solution is crucial to keeping your lawn looking great.

Remember, a lawn with healthy grass will be less likely to be mole infested. Just another reason to have your lawn maintenanced by Ground Level Landscaping.

How to care for your new lawn

New Hydroseeding LawnOften times after Ground Level Landscaping & Irrigation installs a new lawn, customers ask us "how do we maintain it?".

To maintain a lawn you must know how to properly take care of it which includes incorporating different mowing strategies.

Mowing in opposite directions (criss-cross) is a great way to keep grass growing straight. The first week, mow north to south, then the next, east to west. You may find you can work 2-4 different patterns into your lawn. Doing so makes your lawn look great, adding curb appeal as well as keeping your grass healthy.

Also, be careful not to mow the lawn too short or put the blade down too far. Cutting the lawn too short may result in unhealthy grass. If too short, the roots have direct contact with the sunlight, and this may dry out grass and make it appear brown or beige in color. Sharp blades also work best.

If you do not have the tools or time to maintain your lawn, please ask me for recommendations on local lawn service providers.

Advantages of Drip Irrigation

What exactly is drip irrigation?

Drip IrrigationIt's a low-pressure, low-volume watering system that delivers water to home landscapes in a variety of methods, including dripping, spraying and streams.

The system contains tubing which water flows through to deliver directly to the source.

Drip irrigation can be used at farms, commercial greenhouses, and residential gardeners. It's great for containerized landscapes and specialty crop producers.
